Family Fun Arts and Crafts Art Lesson of the Week
=========================================

"6th Gr. Paper Stained Glass Pictures"

Motivation:
Teacher should create examples ahead of time, getting a feel
for the process. Look for and gather other examples,
if possible. Show examples, samples, and demonstrate the process.
Discuss historical stained glass windows and where they are located.
Make sure students understand how real windows relate to the paper
process that will be used for this assignment.

Materials:
Pencils, erasers, glue, scissors, 12 X 18" black and white construction
paper, 9 X 12" scratch paper, various colors of tissue paper, rulers

Procedure:
1)On scratch paper, decide on your idea.
-Keep it simple--one object ideas work best:
an apple, a cup, a heart, a flower, etc.

2)When you've decided on your idea, get a black sheet and use a ruler
to measure a 3/4" border all around it.

3 )Next, draw your idea nice and big in the center.
-Add a 1/2" border line inside your object.
-Add 5-6 1/2" wide connecting lines that go from your object to the
outside border edge. (This insures that your object will stay
connected to the outside border edge later when all your spaces
are cut out. See color photo that comes with this lesson.)

4)Now, you are ready to cut out spaces.
-Use the point of your scissors to poke a hole carefully in the
first space you choose.
-Then put the scissors inside that hole and cut to the edge
of that space.
-Now, cut along that inside edge until that shape is completely
cut out.

5)Repeat step 4 with all spaces inside your object.

6)Next, you need to cut out all spaces around your object.
-Repeat step 4 with all spaces outside your object.

7)When all spaces inside and outside around the object are cut out,
you are ready to add the tissue colors.

8)Choose a tissue color for your first space.
-Lay the space on top of the tissue.
-Trace the inside of the space.
-Remove the space. Now add a 1/2" border line all around the
tissue shape.
-Next, cut on the traced border line of the tissue shape.

9)Now, add a small amount of glue in the 1/2" border space around
your tissue shape.

10)Next, press the tissue shape to the back of the black paper
space you are working on.

11)Repeat steps 8 through 10 for all other spaces.

12)When all spaces are filled with tissue colors, let the black
sheet dry.

13)Now, turn the black sheet over so that you see the back and
raw edges of the tissue colors.
-Add a line of glue all around the 12 X 18" border edge of the
black paper.

14)Finally, press a white sheet onto the glue you just added to the
black sheet. (This covers all the raw edges on the back of the
black sheet and gives it a "neater look".)

5/14/06--5th Gr. Art Lesson PLan

Today’s art lesson is:

“5th Gr. Marker Dot Pictures”

Motivation:
Mom or Grandmom should create examples ahead of time, getting a feel
for the process. Look for and gather other examples,
if possible. Show examples, samples, and demonstrate the process.
Discuss pointillism and a little impressionism--and some of the
artists who worked with this style--particularly Seurat.
This would give students a historical background on this technique.
(A 5th grader could do this project by themselves---they don’t
necessarily need adult help.)

Materials:
Pencils, erasers, 18 X 24" white butcher paper, scratch paper,
  various colors of markers

Procedure:
1)On scratch paper, decide on a drawing idea for your picture.

2)Once your idea is ready, draw it nice and big on an 18 X 24"
  sheet.

3)Decide which marker colors will work well in specific spaces.
(Remember to use light colors in some spaces and darker colors
in other spaces for good contrast.)

4)Take one marker at a time and start to fill the inside of
a space with dots. (Space your dots close together, but not
touching each other. See color photo that came with this
  lesson.)

5)Fill all spaces for better composition.

6)When all spaces are completely filled with dots, you're done.

Mom or Grandmom should create examples ahead of time, getting a feel
for the  process. Look for and gather other painting examples,if
possible. Show  examples, samples, and demonstrate the process.

Also discuss various  kinds of dinosaurs and show pictures of them.
Explain to students  the difference between realistic dinosaur colors
and make-believe colors.

Materials:

12 X 18" white and colored construction papers, pencils, erasers
scratch paper, glue, scissors, dinosaur pictures, colored markers,
black  permanent markers

Procedure:

1)Look at pictures of dinosaurs. Decide on one you'd like to make.

2)On a 12 X 18" white construction paper, draw your dinosaur as big as
the paper.

3)Next, use a black permanent marker to outline the dinosaur.

4)Now, use colored markers to color in various parts of the dinosaur
body. (Use  your imagination--you do not have to use "real" dinaosaur
colors--unless you want to. See also the color photo that goes with
this lesson.)

5)Cut out your dinosaur.

6)Next, choose a colored 12 X 18" colored construction sheet and glue
your dinosaur in the center of it. Let it dry.

7)Draw an outline around your entire dinosaur, approximately 1/2" away
from your original dinosaur edge. (Be sure to follow along the exact
shape of the dinosaur as you draw.)

8)Cut out the dinosaur a 2nd time, this time, along the 2nd outline.

9)You now have a finished dinosaur.
